Frequently asked questions
Everything people ask about Cal.AI: accuracy, what's free, billing, Apple Health and your data.
Getting started
What is Cal.AI?
Cal.AI is an AI calorie counter for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android. Take a photo of a meal and the app identifies the food, estimates the portion and logs calories, protein, carbs and fat. It also scans barcodes, searches a nutrition database, sets personalized daily targets from your goal and body stats, and charts your weight and intake over time.
How does photo calorie counting work?
- The AI recognizes each food in your photo (for example shrimp, romaine, croutons, dressing).
- It estimates each portion from the image.
- It looks up nutrition values per item and totals the meal.
You see every item with calories, protein, carbs and fat, and can edit anything before you save.
Which languages does Cal.AI support?
English, Deutsch, Français, Italiano, Español, Português, 日本語, 한국어, Tiếng Việt and العربية. The app follows your phone's language.
Accuracy
How accurate is Cal.AI?
Photo estimates are approximate. No photo-based tracker can see oil absorbed by food, sugar dissolved in a sauce or what's under the top layer. Accuracy is best when:
- You shoot in natural light or a bright room.
- The whole plate is in frame and in focus, taken from above.
- The dish is simple to separate (a bowl, a plate with distinct items).
For packaged foods, scan the barcode: Cal.AI then uses the nutrition label instead of an estimate. Read more in How accurate is AI calorie counting?
The scan got my food wrong. What should I do?
Tap Fix Results on the result screen. You can rename a food, swap an ingredient or change the portion, and the totals recalculate. If results are still far off after updating to the latest version, email a screenshot to support and we'll look into it.
Can I adjust portion sizes?
Yes. Use the − / + control on the result screen to change the number of servings, or open Fix Results to set a specific portion for any item.
Plans & billing
Is Cal.AI free?
Yes. Cal.AI is free to download and includes free AI scans, the barcode scanner, food search, a personalized calorie plan and progress charts. Cal.AI Pro is optional and unlocks unlimited AI scans, deeper analysis and the Smart Diet Plan. See pricing.
How much does Cal.AI Pro cost?
On the App Store (USD): $1.99 per month, $4.99 per quarter or $11.99 per year. Prices can vary by country and on Google Play. Pro renews automatically until you cancel.
How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?
You can't cancel from inside the app. It goes through your phone's store:
- iPhone: Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Cal.AI → Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Google Play → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Cal.AI → Cancel.
Heads up: deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. You keep access until the end of the paid period after cancelling.
I paid but the app still shows a paywall. What gives?
Annoying, but fixable:
- Open the paywall screen (tap + to log a food, or Settings → Pro).
- Tap Restore Purchase.
- Make sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account you used to buy.
Tip: switched phones or accounts? That's usually the culprit. Restore Purchase on the new device and you're set.
I want a refund. How do I get one?
Refunds depend on where you bought the subscription:
- Apple App Store: Apple reviews and issues refunds directly.
- Google Play: request it through Google.
Tip: not sure where you bought it? Check your email for the receipt. It will say either Apple or Google.
Apple Watch, Apple Health & your data
Does Cal.AI have an Apple Watch app?
Yes. The Apple Watch app shows today's calories left, your macros and the last 3 days at a glance. It installs with the iPhone app and syncs automatically.
Does Cal.AI connect to Apple Health? My steps aren't showing up.
Yes, on iPhone. Turn on the Apple Health integration in Settings inside Cal.AI and allow access to active energy, steps and weight. You choose whether burned calories are added to your daily budget. Data can take a few minutes to sync.
Health data is read only. It is never written back to Apple Health, never sold, never used for advertising and never shared with third parties. Full details in the iOS privacy policy.
Are my food photos stored?
How do I delete my account and data?
Use the delete account option in Settings inside the app, or follow the steps on the delete account page. Deleting the account does not cancel a store subscription, so cancel through Apple or Google first.
Troubleshooting
The app keeps crashing or won't open
- Update Cal.AI to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app.
- Sign back in with the same Apple ID or Google account.
Your diary is stored in the cloud, so reinstalling will not delete it as long as you log back in with the same account. Still crashing? Email support with your device model and OS version.
The barcode won't scan
Hold the phone steady about 10–15 cm from the barcode in good light, and make sure the whole barcode is inside the frame. If the product isn't in the database yet, search for it by name or add it manually once and reuse it later.
